Firstly, it was great to win the Prix Morny last Sunday with Vandeek, I’m not quite sure how far he will stay, but he’s got a very bright future. My last day of riding in the UK is on Saturday before I fly out to Hong Kong on Sunday night, that’s me done because I have to sort out my medical stuff, and ride a bit of work, just really show my face there before the season starts on 10 September. It’s an exciting opportunity and I’m looking forward to it. Obviously, it would be nice to go out with a couple of winners before then, hopefully from my big rides at York.
Capital Theory – 13:50 York
I start on Friday with one for Charlie, he ran well enough the last day at Newmarket after a summer break, he’s been dropped a couple of pounds to 86 and he should appreciate the better ground. However, this is a competitive handicap, the Beckett horse, Balance Play, looks to be improving fast and Gosden’s colt, Intinso, down at the bottom could still be anything.
Giavellotto – 14:25 York
He’s in very good form, obviously the ground is going to be lot better for him tomorrow, it was a funny race at Goodwood in the Cup with Quickthorn going clear, but he ran well. I do think on better ground he quickens a little bit better; we are taking on the same horses again and Quickthorn is obviously in there this time under a penalty. But I’m hoping that surely he can’t be getting that easy time up front again, however I can’t really chase him because my horse is usually dropped in. Mine has won at the track, the ground will be perfect, and I am expecting a big run, it just depends how the race is going to pan out.
Big Evs – 15:35 York
The last 2yo to win this was Kingsgate Native, and it hasn’t been done for a while, but it’s a great ride to get in a big race, and the juveniles get a huge weight allowance from the older horses. I’ll be riding at my lowest weight here, but obviously I knew I was riding this horse a while back, so I’ve had plenty of time to prepare, the last thing you want to do is lose a big chunk of weight in one go. It’s a Group 1 ride so it’s worth it. He was very gutsy last day at Goodwood on ground that he probably didn’t enjoy, the ground should be fine at York. Obviously, the mare Highfield Princess is very good, and Archie Watson’s Bradsell is too, but they are drawn near me and with these sprinters you just never know. He’s a very straight forward horse and with such a low weight there is no point in being smart, so we’ll probably just get on with it and hopefully he will be good enough.
Rowayeh – 16:10 York
I’ve had some success on the track for connections not long ago, I actually worked her a couple of days ago and she worked nicely on the grass, the only thing I was hoping for was to get a good draw, because she’s a filly that needs to settle, especially now going up to 10 furlongs. But we’ve got a draw and she could still be very well handicapped off a mark of 88. The ground went against her at Goodwood, she is by Dubawi out of a War Front mare, so she’d definitely want better ground. If she gets a bit of luck, I’m hopeful she’ll go very close.
Peace Walk – 16:45 York
I don’t know much about Charlie’s newcomer here, he’s well related, but the Convivial is obviously a valuable and good maiden race, so a lot of trainers try to target this race with something above average. It’s always a good race.
Finn’s Charm – 17:15 York
He ran well enough the last day at Newmarket, it’s a competitive handicap, and I’m not sure how much he would have in hand, some of the others look like they may have more scope.
